Meet The Team
Dr. Stephanos Horvers
Co-Founder & CEO
Dr. Horvers holds a BSc in Environmental Engineering from Avans University in the Netherlands and a PhD in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering from The University of Western Ontario. His undergraduate thesis on the thermochemical conversion of waste plastics into value-added fuels and virgin-quality polymers earned him the North American Undergraduate Research Award in Engineering, recognizing his early contributions to sustainable materials innovation.
Since moving to Canada in 2019, he has worked closely with Dr. Franco Berruti at ICFAR, developing deep expertise in thermochemistry, pyrolysis system design, and advanced analytical techniques. His doctoral research focused on the development of carbon-based controlled-release fertilizers, using chemical carbonization pathways to transform lignocellulosic residues into high-performance soil amendments.
Dr. Javier Ordoñez-Loza
Co-Founder & CTO
Dr. Ordoñez-Loza holds his MSc in Chemical Engineering and PhD in Energy Systems from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia and has been working in the field of pyrolysis and waste-to-resource technologies for nearly a decade. His expertise spans the thermochemical valorization of industrial residues, with a particular focus on palm-oil-industry by-products, transforming difficult waste streams into energy, chemicals, and carbon materials.
In 2021, he successfully designed and built a commercial-scale pyrolysis system capable of processing 250 kg/hr of biomass in Colombia - one of the first of its kind in the region. Dr. Ordoñez-Loza brings extensive technical knowledge in process design, reactor operation, and thermal conversion systems, contributing significantly to ITER’s engineering and commercialization efforts.
Dr. Franco Berruti
Co-Founder & COO
Dr. Berruti is a Professional Engineer in Ontario and Professor of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at Western University. He has over 45 years of experience in the field of chemical engineering. He is the co-founder of the Institute for Chemicals and Fuels from Alternative Resources (ICFAR) and has been working with pyrolysis for over four decades. He has held the Industrial Research Chair in Thermochemical Conversion of Biomass and Waste to Bio-Industrial Resources with the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and 12 industry partners from 2018 to 2024. In addition, he is has organized four International Biochar Conferences.
He has garnered a legendary reputation for developing innovative thermal cracking technologies of hydrocarbons and wastes and for building a solid network not only in Canada and North America, but across the world. His award-winning work covers the full spectrum of the waste-value loop.
Our Mission
At ITER Technologies, we act as your all-in-one partner in developing and executing circular economy projects - transforming waste into lasting value through technology, science, and measurable impact.
Step 1: Project Identification
We begin by understanding your feedstock, goals, and sustainability vision - defining the technical and environmental opportunity from the ground up.
Step 2: Technology Supply
We deliver turnkey, self-sustaining pyrolysis systems — engineered for reliability, scalability, and exceptional carbon performance.
Step 3: Analytical Validation
Our lab team provides full chemical, thermal, and surface characterization of feedstocks and products, ensuring quality, traceability, and compliance.
Step 4: Life Cycle Evaluation
We quantify the environmental and carbon impacts of your process, validating true circularity and carbon-negative performance.
Step 5: Carbon Certification
Finally, we guide the certification of your carbon removals under global standards such as Puro.earth and VERRA, turning your environmental impact into verified value.
